Tampa Fishing Charters September Report 2017
It has been a while since I have been able to write a report for Tampa fishing charters. The tarpon fishing here in Tampa Bay is very good right now and will stay that way for sometime. We have tons of resident tarpon in the Tampa area and lts of migratory tarpon here through October. Whether you tackle them fly fishing or on light tackle the fishing in fall is lights out. The crowds are gone, the weather is mild and the fish are feeding all day.
Redfish Bite In Tampa Bay
The redfish action is picking up speed in the Tampa area. Every fall the larger reds gather into schools in preparation for spawning. These are over slot redfish that are a blast to target while fishing Tampa Bay. The fly fishing in Tampa Bay is at it’s peak for redfish and snook right now. It should stay that way until the first big cold fronts settle in. Redfish in Tampa Bay love soft plastics in the fall. I like pearl white or root beer jerk baits by Mirrolure.
Tampa Fly Fishing
Fall really is the time for fly fishing in Tampa Bay. Fly fishing for tarpon is still great with lots of tarpon in the 20 – 80 lb range up for grabs. The fly fishing for permit in Tampa Bay is at it’s peak through October. Very few people target permit here, but they are out in force this time of year. Snook will get better and better as fall progresses. I like white Puglisi style flies tied on a size 1 hook. Blind casting the mangroves with an 8 weight is the way to go.
